About us: UWE Bristol’s Centre for Transport and Society (CTS) is a research centre with the aim of furthering understanding and influence on the interactions between mobility, lifestyles and society in a context of technological change. Our research themes include the following: sustainable transport policies and solutions; travel behaviour, lifestyles and the life course; societal change, technology and transport futures; social impacts of transport; and transport infrastructure and design. Our current research projects include a number of projects linked to new technologies (automated vehicles, sustainable urban freight, micromobility), national and regional evaluations of sustainable transport interventions, young people and transport, and projects developing approaches to appropriate infrastructure design and implementation.
CTS sits within the Department of Geography and Environmental Management which is one of the leading providers of architecture and built and natural environment education, research and knowledge exchange in the country.
The Department takes great pride in the quality and integrity of its learning and teaching provision and has a passion to do the best for all our partners. The Department is characterised by its ability to develop highly employable graduates with sound technical knowledge, strong intellectual understanding and embedded professional skill. The Department maintains excellent links with employers through our consortium activities and has well-established links with the professions. We are an accredited partner of the major professional bodies including RICS, RTPI, CIH, TPP and the Engineering Council. The Department performs exceptionally well in key performance indicators including the National Student Survey results (100% in some courses), employability (90% plus for many courses).
About you: The Centre for Transport and Society is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Transport Studies to contribute both to teaching programmes, mainly in the Department of Geography and Environmental Management, and to the research activities of CTS. This post is progressable to Senior Lecturer. We are looking for someone who can contribute to teaching on the MSc Transport Engineering and Planning which includes modules on transport economics and appraisal, transport planning, transport modelling, travel behaviour, transport policy and infrastructure design. CTS has a wide portfolio of research and we are particularly keen for the post-holder to contribute to current projects evaluating the impacts of transport interventions such as shared mobility schemes, electric micromobility, on-demand public transport and mobility-as-a-service.
Other duties will depend upon the background of the appointee, who will be expected to make an enthusiastic contribution to the life of the centre, the department and faculty. A proven research track record through publication in major conferences and journals, or through practice, is desirable. Membership of relevant academic and/or professional bodies is also desired.
The appointee will be expected to offer pastoral support to students, including acting as academic personal tutor where appropriate. Experience of student project and dissertation supervision would also be advantageous.
This post is based at our lively Frenchay campus where we have invested in the latest facilities and resources to give both our staff and students access to everything they need to succeed – £300m has been invested recently on new state-of-the-art learning spaces and accommodation while we continue to develop incredible new facilities to enhance our offer even further.
Frenchay campus has excellent transport links; as well as being located near the motorway network we are within walking distance of two train stations, our bus terminus connects us to the local bus and metrobus network and we also have a range of cycling and changing facilities.
