About us: The School of Creative and Cultural Industries is a vibrant community grounded in creative practice and humanities. We offer sector-leading creative courses in Photography, Animation, Drama, Filmmaking, and Media Production delivered in outstanding facilities at our City Campus in Bristol, one of the UK’s most dynamic cities.
The Photography department at UWE Bristol is one of the most successful in the country (Guardian subject league tables 2021: No.4 for ‘Filmmaking and Photography’). Our UG and PG provision is underpinned by strong industry relationships, with organisations such as Bristol Photography Festival, IC Visual Lab, and the Royal Photographic Society. We put passion, real-world experience and applied research at the heart of our programmes, so our students develop employability and enterprising career skills along the way.
This post offers the opportunity to be part of a team taking our Photography delivery to new heights. Teaching responsibilities are focussed mainly across our BA Hons Photography course, a well-established programme with an excellent record of student and graduate achievement. However, there will also be opportunities to contribute to our highly-respected MA Photography. Research and/or ongoing creative and professional practice are integral to this role. We will support the post-holder with five weeks per annum set aside for scholarly activity, as well as opportunities for personal development through UWE’s staff training programmes.
About you: We are looking for an experienced photography academic with a proven track record of undergraduate delivery, demonstrating excellent student-focused teaching. An inspiring teacher, you will have the ability to enable our students to develop their creative voice, hone their production and craft skills and develop their future potential. You will be able to bring to life the debates and discourses around contemporary photography and inspire our students to refine and target their image-making potential. You will have excellent professional and/or commercial networks to help our students explore a range of professional environments and develop successful careers. You will bring vision and added value to our distinctive approach to developing ‘artists with savvy’, especially by playing a substantial role in the dissemination of graduate work through appropriate channels. You will also make a strong contribution to the research activity and culture of our programmes, the Department, and the University at large.
You will be qualified to postgraduate level in a subject relevant to this role as well as have evidence of continuing professional development and professional activity. You will possess sufficient breadth and depth of specialist knowledge in the photographic discipline to work within the established teaching programmes, as well as high levels of management, administration, and organisation skills.
You will be working alongside an experienced team of academic and technical instructors, in facilities that encompass a breadth of photographic output, from alternative chemical processes to high quality book making and 2D and 3D digital printing. You will be a team player, thrive in a demanding yet rewarding environment and will make an enthusiastic contribution to the collegiate life of the University. You will either hold, or be willing to undertake within 2 years, a teaching qualification, or Higher Education Academy (HEA) Membership.
